Have you been getting sick more often lately?
Greetings,
So how many times have you gotten sick with some upper respiratory thing in the last year?
There is a question going around in my circles: Could SARS-CoV-2 infection or something about the pandemic response have altered our immunity to common respiratory viruses? What’s happening? People are wondering about this because many of us got COVID several times, and in the last month or two, it seems everyone has been sick with something.
JAMA ran a perspective piece this month entitled, “From ‘Immunity Debt’ to ‘Immunity Theft’—How COVID-19 Might Be Tied to Recent Respiratory Disease Surges.” Author Rita Rubin, MA, talks about the two new terms in our lexicon – immunity debt and immunity theft.
• Immunity debt means our reduced exposure to infectious agents during lockdowns made our immune system not “exercise its muscles” and get ready for what may be coming next.
• Immunity theft means something came in and stole some of our “muscle strength”.
“The surging case numbers and their out-of-whack timing have fueled an ongoing debate about how the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to rates of other infectious diseases. No one yet knows for sure… While immunity debt refers to the ramifications of reduced exposure to a variety of pathogens resulting from efforts to rein in SARS-CoV-2, immunity theft refers to the notion that SARS-CoV-2 itself steals immunity, leaving some people who’ve had COVID-19 more susceptible to other infections. … A recently published brief report describes a small study that found the functions of RSV-specific antibodies in women of childbearing age in British Columbia waned while COVID-19 mitigation measures were implemented.
“After an acute viral respiratory infection, your immune system is in repair mode, explained Wolfgang Leitner, PhD, chief of the Innate Immunity Section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “During that repair cycle, your immune system is suppressed. People who die from influenza typically die from a secondary bacterial infection taking advantage of that immune suppression, not from influenza itself, he noted.
“A recent study found that US children who’d had COVID-19 were significantly more likely to contract RSV.”
As for long COVID, Rubin points out that immunity theft doesn’t explain post–COVID-19 condition (PCC), commonly known as long COVID. But some people might disagree with her and say that the immune system has gone down from COVID and long COVID may be latent viruses resurfacing. A 2023 review article concluded that some long COVID symptoms may be due to chronic immune activation and the presence of persistent SARS-CoV-2 antigen.
A small study published in Cell in August 2023 found that severe COVID-19 can cause long-lasting immune system changes, but the alterations were related to persistent activation, not suppression.
So, have you gotten sick more often? Welcome to the club! It’s growing in numbers daily. My strategy is to be prepared for whatever infectious agent may be coming next by keeping my medicine cabinet stocked so I don’t have to wait to start treatment.
By the way, I attended the FLCCC conference last weekend. I’ll fill you in on it in the next newsletter.
