Kennedy Wants to Shake It Up

Whew. The election is finally over. My mailbox and text messages are thankfully no longer overflowing.

For those of us in medicine, the top news is the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to a cabinet position to head up the department of Health and Human Services (HHS), pending Senate approval.

HHS oversees 13 “operating divisions” including National Institutes of Health (NIH), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Indian Health Service (IHS).

Johns Hopkins School of Medicine professor Dr. Marty Makary recently was interviewed about what the future might hold:

“Early onset Alzheimer’s has tripled. Cancer in young people under age 50 has gone up by 79 percent. We’re looking at half of our nation’s children are sick. We’re looking at 40 percent of our nation’s children now with a mental health diagnosis. One in five kids is on a medication.

What [Kennedy] is really focused on is this concept that we can’t keep drugging our nation’s children, we can’t keep going down this path. That’s what’s dangerous. I think he wants to bring in a lot of scientists from highly respected institutions and let them do good work.

He is talking about health and chronic diseases. It shouldn’t be a political message. And I think you’re seeing a lot of people unite around that message.”

His goals are hugely threatening to established medicine, however. Some Pharma stocks saw an immediate drop in value on the stock market, for example, and the junk food lobby is gearing up for a fight. Click here to read more.

Here’s a chart I think is really interesting:

It is saying we have the same life expectancy as China, but we spend 10 times as much on health care.

Here’s another way of looking at it:

If I could be king for a day, I would wave my wand over the medical schools and radically switch up the curriculum. Today, doctors are pretty much taught to identify the sickness, make a diagnosis that aligns with insurance codes, and prescribe a drug to address symptoms. I would have the curriculums teach health – how to make and keep people healthy. Health care costs would go down, people would be able to think more clearly, and live more vigorously. I also would rename the CDC. I’d call it the CDCP – Centers for Disease Control and Prevention – because “prevention” is as important as disease control. Prevention may not sell a boatload of drugs, but it is a worthwhile effort doctors and the medical establishment should pursue daily.
